The Tournament of Books is almost ON, and we’re taking bets here at AngelSpeak!
Beginning on March 7th (less than 2 weeks from today), one author’s head will roll each day until there is only one left standing – the one that wins the Rooster. The only question is: who will it be?
To help us out (and to encourage back alley gambling), Jennifer Daniel has created this lovely brackets poster:
Two things about this poster:
- You can download it HERE
- You really should click to go to Jennifer Daniel’s website. If for no other reason than to check out her wickedly awesome domain name.
Still not sure what all this roostering and cock-fighting has to do with books? NPR has been gracious enough to put it into language most literary types can understand. Listen to the interview HERE.
Place your bets in the comments section below. The winner(s) will be named here and mentioned frequently throughout the month of April on AngelSpeak and in the most random way possible.
To refresh your memory, here’s the list of contenders:
- The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, by Aimee Bender
- Nox, by Anne Carson
- Bad Marie, by Marcy Dermansky
- Room, by Emma Donoghue
- A Visit From the Goon Squad, by Jennifer Egan
- Freedom, by Jonathan Franzen
- Lord of Misrule, by Jaimy Gordon
- Bloodroot, by Amy Greene
- Next, by James Hynes
- The Finkler Question, by Howard Jacobson
- Skippy Dies, by Paul Murray
- Model Home, by Eric Puchner
- So Much for That, by Lionel Shriver
- Super Sad True Love Story, by Gary Shteyngart
- Kapitoil, by Teddy Wayne
- Savages, by Don Winslow
All bets must be placed by the tournament’s opening on MARCH 7. Good luck!
I am placing my bet on A Visit From the Goon Squad for Champion.
I am also giving odds to anyone betting on The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake to beat out Bloodroot. The latter will pull a first round upset.
Good choice, Kerry. Thanks for the vote – I’m linking to your contest. Well done! I think I’ll take a page from your book next year š
Congratulations on the win! AngelSpeak was on hiatus for most of April – so look for your site to be mentioned here throughout the month of May š
Thank you! I appreciate the mention of course, but I am particularly pleased we were able to have some fun following the Tournament together. The prize is an honor.

Hmm, I’m not a betting woman, but I’ll predict Donoghue, Bender or Shteyngart as champion.
Um, yeah. That’s not really a bet. LOL. Either that or you’ve discovered an awesome way to increase your odds of winning! I’m putting you down for Donoghue since she was your 1st mention š Good luck!
I want Shteyngart! I don’t think Donoghue can hold on until the last round.
difficult choice here – I’ll throw in Amy Greene’s Bloodroot!~
Thanks for playing š Good luck!
